With deployments of massive IoT devices in emerging scenarios and the arrival of 5G wireless technology, placing storage, computations, analytics, and communication close to where data is created is making the case for edge computing. Meet the new member of our reThings product family (rePhonereSpeakerreComputer, reTerminal) reServer, a powerful edge computing system closer to the real world.

Featuring an open modular design, reServer offers developers the freewill to customize it into an edge-computing system specifically for their vertical applications. It supports a list of selectable barebone boards to power up the system, including X86, Raspberry Pi, Nvidia Jetson, and RISC-V. With all these technologies onboard, reServer could be turned into a router, a network-attached storage (NAS), a localized AI computing centre, and many other applications that serve the need for edge computing.

As the very first series on the reServer roadmap, we add our new ODYSSEY X86 V2 computers to its heart to embrace the x86 architecture. There will be 3 versions in the reServer X86 series, among which the version with the highest performance is based on the 11th Gen Intel® Core™ i7 processor with Intel’s brand-new integrated graphics card Iris® Xe, and is intended for use where performance matters the most. On the other hand, more cost-effective options are also available with 11th Gen Intel Core i5 and i3.

Unlike traditional bulky, expensive servers which usually need a large space and a whole team to maintain, reServer is a computing system that sits on the opposite side of this stereotype:

  • reServer features an industrial design with a modern enclosure and a space-saving form factor with dimensions of 124x132x230mm. It easily fits into any emerging computing scenario as being easy-to-use.
  • With a large VC heatsink on board for excellent heat dissipation, reServer can deliver high performance while keeping the system stable.
  • reServer uses a modular design with a removable shell, which ensures its expansibility for a range of configurable features.
  • On the connectivity side, this versatile small form factor system features an abundance of I/O ports and supports various wireless technologies including WIFI 6, 5G, LoRaWAN, and BLE.
  • reServer takes an Edge native computing approach, which takes advantage of core edge attributes such as location, network topology, latency, and cost.

With Thunderbolt 4 equipped, reServer supports two 4K or an 8K display. It is designed for agile applications such as creative studios, design startups, and IT teams. They have needs for a collaborative data process, storage transaction, and even back up especially when remote working takes the trend. It provides a better and more secure data access while applied as a network-attached storage center. Moreover, it can also be applied as an edge computing center for scenarios that require vast data collection and process on the edge including smart agriculture, smart city, and healthcare.

“From our point of view, we see that edge computing and IoT are jointing to create new demand for powerful computing, storage, and communications. You deserve to have a new form of hardware and that’s reServer. We developed it as a platform for different players to create edge computing for the next generation. ”stated Eric Pan, Founder, and CEO at Seeed.

The reServer X86 i3 version is now launched for pre-order on our official store Bazzar, and it will be available for shipping in late June. The i5 and i7 versions will be expected for pre-order respectively in late July and late August.
